The following photos are of Medfield State Hospital in Medfield, MA. Once named Medfield Insane Asylum, it opened in 1892, and was the first of the state’s facilities for dealing with chronic mental patients.

The following photos are of the Tewksbury State Hospital and Infirmary in Tewksbury, MA. These buildings were built between 1894 to 1905 to replace the original wooden buildings that were built as an almshouse for paupers. It then transitioned to a hospital as a “last resort” for the elderly and mentally ill, and as an isolation center for patients with infectious diseases such as smallpox, typhoid fever, and tuberculosis. Anne Sullivan, Helen Keller’s teacher, was admitted there for four years before being transferred to the Perkins School for the Blind.

The following photos are of The Metropolitan State Hospital was a public hospital for the mentally ill located in parts of Waltham, Lexington, and Belmont, MA. Founded in 1927, it was at one time the largest and most modern facility of it’s time in Massachusetts. The only building currently remaining is the Administration Building.
